To best incorporate systems thinking in chemistry education, considerations of the learner must take precedence. However, relatively little is known about the interactions between the chemistry learner and systems thinking and the skills necessary for learners to engage meaningfully. This article highlights opportunities and challenges for employing systems thinking and encourages further research and development to fill the knowledge gaps that are present.
