This article walks through the concept of systems thinking and the assessment of students’ understanding in a systems thinking-oriented educational environment. As an example, lead in drinking water is used as an example of how systems thinking can be introduced and assessed in general chemistry. Lastly, this article analyzes systems thinking carried out in a general chemistry curriculum that is infused with underlying systems thinking characteristics.
