This article, in conjunction with the IUPAC STICE project, recognizes the importance of systems thinking in chemistry education. The benefits of systems thinking approaches as well as the major findings about the applications of systems thinking are described in this article. This article highlights the lack of systems thinking in the physical and mathematical sciences and the lack of research into the development of teachers’ systems thinking abilities.
