This article explores the value of using SOCMEs and concept maps (different visualization tools) with a scaffolding approach in nonscience major courses. This was accomplished by having students create concept maps and expand them to SOCMEs so that they could be evaluated on the knowledge they demonstrated, the composition of their visual tool and it structure. This process, implemented in the context of systems thinking, was very effective and engaged students with multilevel thinking and complexity on various levels. Valuable insights were understood as having been made as students were able to engage with complex connections and recognize chemistry as the backbone of real-world issues.
