This article explores the role of chemistry in addressing global sustainability challenges through a systems thinking perspective. Using reactive nitrogen compounds as a case study, the authors highlight how chemical processes can both sustain life and contribute to environmental challenges. To navigate these trade offs, the authors use system thinking tools and the Planetary Boundaries framework to propose strategies to integrate sustainability to chemistry education.
