This article focusses on the construction of The Characteristics Essential for designing or Modifying Instruction for a Systems Thinking approach (chEMIST) framework, which identifies five key characteristics of systems thinking and their associated systems thinking skills. In addition to describing the construction of this tool, the article also highlights the inspiration behind its development and provides examples of how the tool might be use to support the implementation of systems thinking in chemistry education.
